What Is a Revision Rhinoplasty?

You must have seen people around you who have undergone several nose job and wondered why? Sometimes, the result of the primary nose job is not satisfactory to the patient due to the difficulty of the first nose surgery or the plastic surgeon’s lack of experience or due to other factors.

Rhinoplasty performed for the first time is called primary rhinoplasty, and subsequent surgeries performed on the patient’s nose are called secondary or revision rhinoplasty surgeries.

Revision rhinoplasty: Why some patients seek it?

Revision or secondary rhinoplasty is a plastic surgery in Iran in which the nose goes under the knife to be reshaped or achieve a functional change after primary rhinoplasty. A secondary nose job is performed when the desired result is not achieved in the primary nose job.

For example, there might be very slight imperfections on the nose after the primary surgery so that the nose tip might be drooping or wide, the cartilage on both sides of the nose tip might be asymmetric, the nostrils might be uneven, or a deviation from the inside might still be there causing the patient to have breathing difficulty.

The most common reason for a revision rhinoplasty

The most common reason for revision rhinoplasty is that the patient’s respiratory condition worsens after the previous surgery. After talking to the patient and carefully examining the structure of the patient’s nasal structure from the outside and inside, a right rhinoplasty surgeon may conclude that secondary rhinoplasty may or may not achieve the desired result and decide about the nose job whether to perform it or not.

The revision nose job is one of the most complex plastic surgeries.

Revision or secondary nose job in Iran is often much more complicated and difficult than primary rhinoplasty. Primary rhinoplasty is always the best time to deal with all rhinoplasty problems, both aesthetically and functionally. However, suppose the primary nose job does not achieve the desired result. In that case, revision rhinoplasty can also be successful with the proper use of advanced surgical techniques and the surgeon’s expertise and skill.

Ten reasons why secondary rhinoplasty is needed!

If there are still problems after the primary surgery or if new disorders are caused by it, or even if the patient’s condition has worsened, secondary rhinoplasty or revision nose job is performed. Due to unpredicted complications or incorrect techniques used by the nose job surgeon, unexpected complications may occur in the nose. The nose may not be in harmony with other facial features. In any case, a secondary nose job is performed if the primary surgery has not achieved the desired result either aesthetically or medically.

If some problems arise after primary rhinoplasty or if the issues due to which the patient went under the knife of a plastic surgeon for the first time are not solved, an experienced plastic surgeon will recommend a revision rhinoplasty. Some of these problems are:

  1. Nasal airway obstruction
  2. Nasal cartilage or bone dropping
  3. The artificial appearance of the nose (extreme rhinoplasty)
  4. Dropping of the external and internal valves of the nose
  5. Nasal symmetry deterioration
  6. Insufficient decrease or increase in posterior nasal height (bridge height or nasal protrusion)
  7. Inappropriate nose shaping (inappropriate change in the appearance of the nose in terms of aesthetic measures)
  8. Excessive reduction or enlarging the nasal tip
  9. Excessive narrowing of the tip of the nose
  10. Creating internal or external thick scar tissue

The problems with primary rhinoplasty are sometimes minor and can be easily corrected. However, suppose there is a significant problem in the nose after the first rhinoplasty. In that case, revision rhinoplasty needs more expertise because the natural anatomy of the nose has been manipulated.

The simple tissues that existed before the primary surgery are now filled with scar tissue, making it difficult to reposition the remaining cartilage and bone. The GOMEDIRAN group’s experienced surgeons can significantly improve the patient’s nose’s appearance and function dramatically using advanced techniques and their years of experience and scientific study.

A revision nose job can be performed after a certain period when the post-surgery swelling of the nose fades away, and the actual form of the surgery reveals.

The best result for a revision rhinoplasty

An outstanding result of rhinoplasty will be achieved if secondary (revision) rhinoplasty is carefully planned and accompanied by the patient and the doctor’s patience. A very experienced surgeon should perform secondary rhinoplasty to avoid the need for third and fourth surgeries.

In any case, patients should not worry. If the surgeon has planned well in the primary surgery, there is usually no need for a secondary rhinoplasty. However, with all the predictions, it is possible in 5% of cases to perform secondary (revision) rhinoplasty, which will completely solve the patient’s problem if done well.

Who is the right candidate for the revision nose job?

The suitable candidate for revision rhinoplasty is a healthy person who is not satisfied with the previous plastic nose job for cosmetic, harmonic, or medical reasons. The proper time to undergo this surgery is approximately one year after the previous one. Although patients may feel compelled to undergo revision rhinoplasty sooner due to severe dissatisfaction, it is necessary to wait for the required time to elapse and the swelling to subside entirely after surgery to reduce surgical error risk.

How long after primary rhinoplasty can I have a revision nose job?

One of the most important things to keep in mind before undergoing revision nose surgery is the period between the two surgeries. Therefore, if your nose is not ready for secondary rhinoplasty, it does not matter if you have chosen the best revision rhinoplasty surgeon or not!

According to what many plastic surgeons in Iran agree, it is better to wait six to twelve months after the previous surgery because the final result is revealed. The nose’s swelling goes away completely and the wounds created in the last surgery heal completely after one year. Therefore, to solve the previous problem with a revision rhinoplasty specialist, you must be patient and wait for the required period.

Recovery time and care after revision rhinoplasty

Postoperative care after a revision nose job is similar to that after primary rhinoplasty. Nasal tampons reduce swelling and bleeding after surgery, but you cannot breathe through the nose until the tampon is removed. The surgeon prescribes painkillers to reduce pain after surgery. You may experience nausea after surgery, in which case the surgeon will prescribe anti-nausea medications.

The nose may bleed for a few days. Applying a cold compress to the forehead reduces swelling. It is also best to raise your head in the first week after surgery and be careful not to hit or injure your nose for 6-8 weeks. It is also forbidden to blow your nose for 2-3 weeks after any nose surgery. However, the nasal passages should be cleaned as soon as the tampon is removed, after which the nasal congestion and the need to blow your nose are significantly reduced.

The surgery team will remove the sutures and nasal splint three to seven days after the surgery. At this time, your nose is still slightly swollen, although most of the swelling subsides after two weeks.

Six main risks of the revision rhinoplasty

After revision rhinoplasty, just like primary rhinoplasty, there is a possibility of some complications, such as:

  1. Loss of smell sense
  2. Prolonged swelling
  3. Capillary rupture
  4. Significant scarring and even loss of skin
  5. Complications related to anesthesia
  6. Other aesthetic or functional problems

An experienced plastic surgeon will inform you of all these complications and risks of revision rhinoplasty beforehand.

Will the result of the revision rhinoplasty be perfect?

Your wishes to change the appearance of your nose are always considered, but factors such as:

  • The structure and thickness of the skin tissue
  •  The amount of scar tissue from previous surgery
  • And your facial proportions

may often affect revision rhinoplasty outcomes. Each of these factors plays an essential role in the result of secondary rhinoplasty.

In any case, you should know that revision rhinoplasty is much more complicated than the primary one. If your expectations are not realistic, you may still not be satisfied with your revision nose job.

Which country has the best revision rhinoplasty surgeons

Iranian rhinoplasty surgeons are among the best revision rhinoplasty surgeons in the world. Some cosmetic surgeons in the US, UK, and Canada are also good cosmetic surgeons for the revision nose job.

Is revision rhinoplasty more expensive?

Rhinoplasty is one of the most complex cosmetic surgeries, and revision rhinoplasty is the most challenging rhinoplasty. Some surgical conditions and complications prolong surgery time and require more skill to perform a successful surgery.

Revision rhinoplasty should be performed with more precision and skill than primary surgery. Therefore, it is evident that the operating room costs, anesthesia costs, and patient care for a more extended period increase and raise revision rhinoplasty costs.

So, yes, the cost of revision rhinoplasty is more than primary rhinoplasty.

Try to choose the best plastic surgeons for your primary nose job to not need a revision rhinoplasty. If your nose job was unfortunately not successful, be sure to give us a visit to undergo your revision rhinoplasty in Iran.
